Visitando Italia is pleased to offer you a daily itinerary to discover Viterbo, the capital of Tuscia where art, nature and archeology intersect in a scenic landscape of enchanting beauty.
We will visit the Etruscan necropolis of Castel D'Asso, this necropolis develops along the cliffs that dominate the valley of the Freddano stream and is characterized by numerous tombs variously carved into the rock between the 7th and 2nd century BC, distributed over two or even three orders superimposed.
Afterwards we will continue our visit to Ferento. The archaeological area of Ferento was discovered in the early years of the 20th century and, after a few decades of interruption, excavations were then resumed after the war. Along the Via Ferentiensis, in addition to the ancient city walls, you can observe the remains of the Baths, the Forum and the imposing Theater which was built in the 1st century AD, in the north-eastern area of the city nucleus and we will finish the morning with the visit to the Rocca National Archaeological Museum, of which it is possible to appreciate a reconstruction of the theater scene, decorated by the statues of the Muses.
Free time for lunch.
Once the free time is over, we will visit medieval Viterbo and the palace of the Popes.
The historic center of Viterbo represents one of the most typical examples of medieval architecture and in particular the San Pellegrino district, with its characteristic houses built on the tuff, contains a fascinating succession of enchanting views.
However, the main nucleus of the historic center of Viterbo is the San Lorenzo hill which, in medieval times, was the official seat of the Popes and still today the papal palace continues to be the most symbolic place of that era. The building, in Romanesque style, is flanked by the monumental Cathedral dedicated to San Lorenzo. The itinerary ends with a visit to the Museo del Colle del Duomo with the famous Sala del Conclave where the popes were elected.
